CCUS deployment worldwide will largely depend on the following:
1. Cost reduction of CCUS technology deployment and operation
2. CCUS innovation
3. International collaboration on CCUS
CCUS offers the landscape for new economic opportunities while decarbonizing the economy. However currently it is too expensive and cost reductions are essential to encourage its wide deployment.
CCUS research, development and innovation will be vital in reducing the costs of CCUS by developing less costly and more efficient technologies and components, exploring new applications and driving innovations that reduce the CO2 transportation and storage costs.
CCUS can reduce overall system costs in the power sector by providing greater diversity in power generation options. In steel, cement, and chemicals production industries CCUS will be able to enable significant emissions reductions. Additionally, CCUS can facilitate the rapid development of low-carbon energy pathways, including hydrogen production that can be used for heating, transportation, and power generation, as well as open up new markets for low carbon and carbon-based goods.
Carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technologies such as bioenergy with CCUS and direct air capture can be accelerated with its infrastructure and know-how. According to the recent IPCC special report, several hundred gigatonnes of CDR will be needed by the end of the century if a wide range of climate actions is taken - rising to 1,000 GT if no other measures are taken.
Policymakers should provide support by implementing appropriate legal and regulatory framework in order to turn this momentum into action.
